Life-saving efforts were unsuccessful, according to the park service.

Nearby backpackers were eventually able to contact police through a delayed 911 text.

Park rangers and EMTs responded to the scene, and the woman’s body was taken out of the area Tuesday morning.

Isle Royale is a 206-square-mile island that is in the Michigan section of Lake Superior, but its closest shoreline is the northeastern tip of Minnesota and southern Ontario, Canada.
