Iron Range, rural St. Louis County see opioid settlement funds invested into repairing communities
ELY — Kap Wilkes heard it from interviews and surveys throughout the Ely area: Substance abuse and the opioid epidemic were impacting the community. The vicious cycle of addiction, rehabilitation and relapse had ridden through the scenic Boundary Waters city, as it had through Greater Minnesota, the Twin Cities, Midwest and nationally.
Chisholm hears first reading of amendment related to shipping containers
CHISHOLM—Businesses in Chisholm’s Industrial Park may soon be able to add a shipping containers as an accessory to their primary building. “A shipping container is a six-sided steel unit originally constructed as a general cargo container for the transport of goods and materials,” as described on the proposed ordinance amendment. Ben Hoyt’s recent trip to Guatemala was a life-changing experience for the Lake Country Power journeyman lineworker and also for the eastern village residents that received electricity for the first time. Hoyt, who works in Mountain Iron, and 13 other line workers built 3.5 miles of primary and secondary line, carried transformers by hand, wired homes with wall outlets and light bulbs, and provided water filters to the Guatemalan people, an LCP news release said. ...

Soil at Public Safety Center site being cleaned up
VIRGINIA—The Public Safety Center project in Virginia is moving along, which includes cleaning up some contaminated soils on the property. The Virginia City Council—at a committee meeting Tuesday—approved up to $200,000 to clean up the area that runs along the former railway corridor on the site.
