FULTON COUNTY, N.Y. ( NEWS10 ) — A policeman in Broadalbin came upon a distressed child who wasn’t breathing , later reviving the baby. Fulton County Sheriff’s Deputy Nathan Marshall described the frantic moment when family members of the young child frantically flagged him down.

“The infant’s aunt is the one who ran over to me with the child” Marshall recalled.

This all played out on July 14th at the Broadalbin Boat Launch. Deputy Marshall had to overcome a language barrier, Spanish, to determine what was wrong.

“We didn’t know if it was drowning if she was choking,” said Marshall. “We discovered she had a seizure” he recounted.

“The deputy immediately did what he was supposed to do with an infant. Check to make sure there’s nothing in the child’s mouth, there was nothing obstructing breathing. He placed the infant’s face down in his palm which is supposed to do with infants, and padded the child 10 times slightly on the back to see if there’s anything to dislodge or to try to get the heart going” said Fulton County Sheriff Richard Giardino.

Marshall told NEWS10’s Zion Decoteau that his training kicked in immediately especially because he recently completed a CPR refresher course.

“In that type of situation and those medical emergencies you don’t really have time to hesitate,” said Marshall.

Then a sign of relief — the baby started crying.

“I was just elated that she was just okay,” Marshall said.

Giardino says the child’s condition was likely heat-related. He recommends keeping young children in cool areas and not leaving them in cars alone even with A/C. The sheriff told NEWS10’s Zion Decoteau he wants to honor Deputy Marshall’s heroic acts in a public ceremony.

“We need to support the police all the time but when they do something right we need to recognize that,” said Giardino.

“It was an entire group effort,” Marshall said modestly.

The baby girl in the video was released from the hospital later that night. Deputy Marshall tells us she’s doing fine!
