ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — An awesome program is bringing folks from all over the world to Brockport this summer.

It’s called Camp Abilities — a one-week overnight educational sports camp for children with visual impairments or deaf/blindness. Campers range in age from nine to 19 and come from a variety of backgrounds. They stay in dorms on the SUNY Brockport campus, learning how to play games like blind tennis and sailing with the local yacht club.

Folks with the camp say opportunities like this can go a long way.

“I started at Camp Abilities when I was just a wee little lad,” current coach and former camper Braiden Wingrove said. “I had absolutely nothing to do with sports if I’m being honest, but as the years progressed I found opportunities for myself to use the skills I honed from camp to join my school’s cross country team, or track team.”

Many of the coaches at Camp Abilities are college students studying to become educators themselves.

The entire camp will participate in Brockport’s Fourth of July parade Thursday.
