C-Mac is coming around to the idea of flipping Judge and Soto in Yankees' lineup

Juan Soto and Aaron Judge have both had great seasons mostly hitting in the 2-3 spots, respectively, and after Judge hit his 30th homer of the season Wednesday night, visions of him breaking his own record are dancing in Yankees fans’ heads.

But to Chris McMonigle, if the 4-9 spots continue to be weak, so will Judge’s numbers, because there’s NO reason for pitchers to pitch to him.

“He’s gonna get walked. He’s going to get the Barry Bonds treatment, which leads me to something I've been thinking about, and I was against it for a long time,” C-Mac said. “I was against it at the start of the year…but do you move Soto behind Judge? I’m starting to think it makes sense.”

To be fair, in the current setup, whichever one hits second is going to get that, but Judge right now is out-producing Soto and has already drawn five intentional walks to Soto’s zero – but as for drawing walks…

“This makes sense for a couple reasons, and one is that even when Soto is struggling, he takes walks; that’s his game, so if he's gonna be the third hitter walked with no protection, it's almost like that happens most of the time with Juan Soto,” Chris said. “It’s not the same, but as much as I like the idea of Soto getting on base, because that's what he does in front of Judge with Stanton behind Judge, I like the idea of giving Judge the ability to have a legitimate hitter behind him to make sure they pitch to him. I'd rather make sure they pitch to Judge than Soto, because Soto is more prone to take the walk anyway, and he's not gonna do the same kind of damage as Judge.”

That said, there are other pitfalls.

“In a big spot you might walk Judge and bring in a lefty to face Soto anyway, because that's how good he's been,” C-Mac said. “But there's no doubt who the better hitter is, who the best hitter in baseball is: it’s Aaron Judge, and it’s not close, and for the first time, I'm really starting to think about maybe switching the lineup up because I need to protect Judge.”

C-Mac says wait and see if Judge does start getting the Bonds treatment – he did hit two homers in two games in Queens, after all – but it’s an idea to tinker with.
