Moose on the Loose: Yankees struggling

NEW YORK (PIX11) — The New York Yankees have nine games left until the All-Star break and they are reaching for the finish line.

The Yankees have not won any of their last six series. They are 5-14 in their last 19 games. They trail the Baltimore Orioles by two games in the American League East. All the good work they have done, they have flushed down the toilet.

The Yankees’ starting rotation, which was a bright spot for the first two months, has soured with the recent struggles of Luis Gil, Carlos Rodón, Marcus Stroman and Nestor Cortes.

Their lineup looks remarkably thin now with the reliance night in and night out on Juan Soto and Aaron Judge.

As they get set to entertain the Boston Red Sox this weekend in the Bronx, they are coming off getting swept by the Cincinnati Reds, which is downright embarrassing.

The question is what you do to spark this team. Manager Aaron Boone is not getting fired. You cannot change all the players, and we are still a bit away from the MLB trade deadline.

It is not just the fact that the Yankees are losing, it is the malaise that they are playing the game with, including Gleyber Torres’ lack of hustle against the New York Mets, Alex Verdugo breaking for home when the ball is hit too short on a drawn-in infield, and Trent Grisham turning a single into a double by lackadaisical fielding of the ball in center field in the ninth inning.

Boone loves to hold umpires accountable but falls short in doing so, at least publicly, with his players. Maybe it is time for Boone to light a fire, and instead of rationalizing out the play by Grisham in Thursday’s loss to the Reds, hold him accountable that his lack of effort is not acceptable.

As the Yankees season is falling off of a cliff, nobody wants to hear about the slow heartbeat and style that Grisham plays the game with. Just an idea, Aaron. Because if the sweep by the Reds was not rock bottom, buckle up Yankees fans.
