Is It Now Time For The New York Yankees To Worry?

What was first considered a June slump for the New York Yankees has currently become a complete disaster for the New York baseball club. The Yankees have not won a single series since June 12th and have only won six of their last 22 games. This squad has started to become a repeat of the 2023 season, and many Yankees fans are urging to make trades if they want to have a strong chance at winning it all.

    Strengthen The Pitching Staff

The Yankees have been in the market for a starting pitcher, and Chicago White Sox’s Garret Crochet has been a name making the rounds. New York Post’s Jon Heyman believes Garret can be a player who can help the Yankees’ pitching staff and stop some of the bleeding that teams have caused the Yankees. The ex-reliever turned starting pitcher has had a great 2024 season, leading the American League in strikeouts with 141 and a 3.9 WAR.

There are concerns about his longevity as a starting pitcher, as Crochet is nearing 200 innings pitched this season. In previous seasons, Crochet has not pitched more than 54 1/3 innings. The Yankees are very interested in a trade for Crochet, but they would have to compete against other big-market baseball clubs such as the Dodgers, Orioles, and the Padres.

Another trade rumor swirling is the idea of acquiring Miami Marlins’ relief pitcher Tanner Scott. The lefty pitcher would be a considerable acquisition for the Bronx Bombers. According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, Scott’s 12 outings in June have him at an ERA of 1.38, 15 strikeouts, and a 0.85 WHIP over 13 innings. This is the type of move that the Yankees should make to help solidify their bullpen as it is one of the weakest parts of their game.

    Trade DJ LeMaheiu

Yankees fans were excited to get DJ LeMaheiu back after recovering from a foot injury suffered last season. The fanfare was short-lived as LeMaheiu underperformed and became a disappointment offensively . In his 103 at-bats in the 2024 season, LeMaheiu has a batting average of .291, an OPS of .511, and slugging at .223.

Colorado Rockies’ 3rd baseman Ryan McMahon is a player Yankees fans should be the optimal replacement for LeMaheiu. McMahon has a batting average of .272, an OPS of.801, and slugging at .454. The only issue is that the Rockies might not want to get rid of McMahon, nor would they want to replace him with DJ LeMaheiu.

The Yankees could entice them with a trade package that lands the Rockies with some young prospects, but New York would not want to part with them either.

What Now For The New York Yankees?

The Yankees need to make changes, and they need to make them now. Fans are vocally frustrated with how their team has been playing, especially getting knocked down to second place in the AL East.

Strengthening the bullpen and getting younger outfielders can potentially stop the bleeding of consistent losses and get the Yankees back on top of the baseball world. Whether or not the Yankees make these moves or if they'll make a difference to this franchise remains to be seen.
