Yankees named landing spot in trade for Gold Glove infielder

Needing to make a move to keep up in the second half, the New York Yankees could very well look to improve the depth chart at second base when the trade deadline arrives.

Even though Gleyber Torres has had a decent resurgence with a .300 batting average and .801 OPS over his last 17 games, the Yankees need more consistent production on both sides of the ball at second base.

That's why Jon Morosi of MLB Network named the Yankees as a landing spot for Chicago Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner — along with former Yankees outfielder Mike Tauchman.

Hoerner, a 2023 Gold Glove winner, has a .257 batting average with four home runs, 30 RBI and a .686 OPS. He's fared better as of late with a 120 OPS+ over his last 11 games.

He's an elite contact hitter but doesn't provide much juice in terms of barrels and extra-base hits.

Hoerner might not make the offense completely better, but he does have a .730 OPS from the leadoff spot this season. That's a spot in the order the Yankees desperately need an upgrade.

Bringing on Hoerner would likely mean kicking Torres to the bench, but the Yankees don't have time to worry about that.

They are falling behind in the American League playoff race with the second-worst record in MLB over the last 30 games (10-20).

Tauchman has been a league-average hitter this season with a 99 OPS+, but he does have a .350 OBP from the leadoff spot.

The trade deadline is less than a week away so it will be interesting if the Yankees make any moves like this.
