Brooklet annexes 278 acres to be used for single-family developments
Brooklet City Council members approved the annexation of 278 acres of land into city limits at the Thursday July 18, 2024 meeting. 25 acres of adjoining property, also belonging to the Weyerhaeuser company, was already within city limits, and the entire 300 acre tract of land was rezoned as R-3. The approval of this rezoning came with heavy restrictions to the classification of R-3, which typically includes for the allowance of multi-family dwellings, but was essentially limited to only single family dwellings. Ethics board determines Guyton councilman committed 'technical violation of the ordinance'
Theodore Hamby will maintain his post on city council in Guyton. The announcement was made during a special called meeting Thursday night following an investigation into an ethics complaint made in May. The two-man ethics board, which consists of Reginald Stanmar and Robert Hunter, determined Hamby committed a technical violation. Mayor Andy Harville read a statement from the ethics board which reads in part, “There was a technical violation of the ordinance…the violation occurs due to the language involved in the ordinance. A city official shall not use his or her position in any way to coerce or give the appearance towards another person to provide any financial benefit.”

The Senate Study Committee on the Preservation of Georgia’s Farmlands is about to convene for the first time, with discussions poised to address the critical factors impacting the state's rural landscapes. Chaired by Sen. Billy Hickman (R–Statesboro), this meeting is scheduled for July 30, 2024, at the Georgia Southern University's Continuing Education Building located at 10449 US Highway 301 in Statesboro, according to the Senate Press.
Boosting Culture: Grants Support City Arts Projects in Georgia
The Georgia Council for the Arts (GCA) recently announced that more than $3.5 million in competitive grant funding will be distributed to recipients across the state through its Bridge, Project, and Arts Education Program grants. A total of 324 grants were awarded during GCA’s initial disbursements for fiscal year 2025. Among the recipients, the cities of Chamblee, Savannah, and Toccoa, along with the Downtown Statesboro Development Authority, each received an $8,000 grant.
