On MDI, contractors band together to fix storm-damaged road — for free
Contractors from Southwest Harbor and beyond said they will donate time and materials to fix a section of the popular Seawall Road that was damaged by storms last winter. According to a post on John Goodwin Jr. Construction’s Facebook page last week, the contractors “are going to begin rebuilding the beloved Seawall Road as a donation to our communities on Monday, July 22.” The companies donating their work include Goodwin, Doug Gott & Sons Inc., BFP Trucking, Rings Paving, Northeast Paving and GT Outhouses.
Local contractors begin repairing Seawall Road to open by next week
SOUTHWEST HARBOR, Maine — Local crews started repairing Seawall Road in Southwest Harbor Monday after a portion of the scenic drive closed in March due to storm damage. When the Maine Department of Transportation announced that it will restore the road in the spring, the town decided to temporarily fix the road to open it to two-way traffic sooner. Five contractors are donating their time and services to get the road reopened by next week.

Author will discuss 'The Pursuit of Happiness' in Southwest Harbor

This program is in-person only with registration required.
A decade-long cleanup of the Penobscot River to begin with pilot project
The pieces are coming together for a project to try and rid Penobscot River water of its worst mercury contamination. A pilot project could begin later this year if it receives all the necessary permits. Pollution has forced the state to urge consumers to limit their intake of fish taken from the river, which is a particular concern to the Wabanaki people.
CFAAM to showcase art in Southwest Harbor
SOUTHWEST HARBOR — The Coastal Fine Arts Alliance of Maine (CFAAM) will be presenting a juried art show at the Gallery on the Pemetic Green in Southwest Harbor from July 27-28 and Aug 3-4. This show will be returning for its 25th year and will be host to many storied artists from coastal Maine. CFAAM is a non-profit organization “dedicated to creating exhibit and sales opportunities for our participating artists,” according to the organization’s website. The group was founded in 1999 and coordinates three juried festivals held on Mount Desert Island each year.
COA Summer Institute focuses on democracy
BAR HARBOR — The 2024 College of the Atlantic Summer Institute: Questions of Democracy examines democracy in the United States during what many consider to be one of the most consequential years of our times. Speakers will explore questions of authoritarianism, artistic freedom and sociopolitical change during a total of 11 sessions over five days, July 29–Aug. 2.
