Nikki Sotto, a spokesperson for South Padre Island City, noted that the first incident occurred at 11 AM local time. It was relayed to emergency services as “a severe shark bite to the leg.” Thereafter, the victim was rushed to hospital, per NBC News .

The second incident received more attention and was even filmed by bystander, Kyle Jud.

In a captioned video posted to Instagram , he recalled seeing a woman being carried out of the water with an injured leg.

Leading up to the incident, Jud claims that beachgoers were warned of an interaction between a shark and a fisherman .

“We were hanging out at the beach and the beach patrol rolled up and warned us that a fisherman had gotten hot by a shark just north of us,” Jud’s account read.

“We got everyone out of the water and we [were] just sitting around when there was a big commotion about 100 yards north of us.”

“A woman was bitten in the leg and lost most of her calf. She lost a lot of blood before they were able to get a tourniquet on her.”

Despite the increased level of attention, the shark still lingered long enough to be captured on camera.

After warning locals not to venture into the water again, officials “pushed” the predatory marine beast out to sea.

According to Texas Parks and Wildlife , “Shark encounters of this nature are not a common occurrence in Texas. When bites from sharks do occur, they are usually a case of mistaken identity by sharks looking for food.”

Texas Fire Chief, Jim Pigg, serving the community of South Padre Island where the attacks occurred, mirrored the wildlife agency's sentiments, saying that the attacks were “unprecedented […] on South Padre Island.”

The wildlife agency further noted its understanding of the attacks and how they were handled.

“Details at this time indicate that two people were bitten and two people encountered the shark but were not seriously injured,” it wrote in a press release.

“The two victims who were bitten were transported to Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville where one is being treated and the other has been flown out for further treatment.”

Another state to endure the wiles of a hungry shark during the Independence Day festivities was Florida.

Here, the incident took place in knee-deep water and involved a 21-year-old man who was playing football.

The unnamed individual, originally from Ohio , suffered his injuries on the New Smyrna beach in Volusia County.

Interim director of Florida’s beach safety, Tamra Malphurs, has since weighed in on the incident indicating that the injury was not life-threatening, per NBC News .
