At age 102, Hattie Flowers says ‘Take a Kid Fishing’

Hattie Flowers and fishing are synonymous.

    And, for good reason.

As a child, Hattie began fishing with a cut cane pole, a hook and fresh-dug worms.

Now, as a fifth-generation fisherman, Hattie is not sitting on the creek bank pulling in supper but, at age 102, she’s not sitting anywhere.

“Oh, I’m still moving around and enjoying life,” said “Miss Hattie” as she is affectionately known around the Brundidge area. “I don’t get to fish like I did when I was a little younger. But, I’ve always liked to fish. I would go tomorrow if somebody came by and got me. Fishing has changed so I know how to fish with a spinner but, there’s nothing like fishing with a cane pole.”

Hattie Flowers is a grandmother and a great-great-great grandmother and she can keep up with all of them.

“When my grandchildren were young, I took them fishing because I enjoyed it and I wanted them to enjoy fishing, too,” Flowers said. “Fishing is something you can enjoy all your life. You just sit on the bank, bait your hook and fish.

“For a long time, I would take my grandchildren to the free fishing day in Pronto and we always had a good time. It didn’t matter if we caught a fish or not.”

“Miss Hattie” said a day fishing with someone you love is a blessed day.

So, take time to take a kid fishing Saturday at Clay Hill Farms in Pronto. It’s free; it’s fun; and it will be a time to remember.
