Cowboys drop Garner, 47-27 Brian Smith Tue, 02/13/2024 - 8:24 pm Paced by 40% shooting (19-48) from the floor, Bryson’s varsity boys basketballers stayed in the District 21-A playoff hunt with a 47-27 victory Tuesday, Feb. 6 over visiting Garner. TheCowboysopened the contest on an 8-0 run on baskets and free throws from Caleb Allen, Jameson Pierce and Evan Ford. The free throws, where Bryson was 6-12 in the quarter at the line, helped as the Cowboys were just 2-12 shooting from the floor. Garner was just 2-10 and were behind 10-5 after one. The middle quarters were solid offensively for Bryson, the hosts shooting better than 50% or above in both quarters. GavinSadlerandFord combined with Allen to extend the lead to 14, the squad using sharp, crisp passing down low for easy lay-ins. Garner held tough late, using a pair of three-pointers to get within six. Sophomore Ben Bennett’s outback just ahead of the buzzer had Bryson back up by double figures, 22-12 at the half. Determined to put the Longhorns in the rearview mirror, the solid passing down low continued to mystify the visitors with both Sadler and Ford reaping the benefits of the passing. Ford had four baskets in the quarter as the Cowboys went up by as many as 19. Garner, which shot just 26% for the game, had its worst shooting quarter of the contest in going 1-9 from the floor, to help Bryson take a 35-17 lead into the fourth. Garner would get within 13 early in the fourth but the Cowboys took advantage of a Ford three-pointer and baskets from Pierce and Keston Menchaca pushing the lead to 18. Pierce’s three-pointer late accounted for the final margin. Ford had 20 points to lead Bryson with Pierce adding eight, Allen seven and Sadler six. The Cowboys lost on the road Friday, Feb. 9 to the Newcastle Bobcats, 43-26, and played Perrin at home Tuesday, Feb. 13 for Senior Night. Information was unavailable as of press time.
