The board discussed but made no decision on dress code changes. Photo/Brian Smith Bryson ISD board members discussed a possible change in the district dress code during the meeting last week. Principal Gary Kirby, on the request of secondary school students, asked the board at its Monday, June 17 meeting to change district policy which bans tights for students in sixth grade and older. “Spandex, yoga pants, jeggings or any tight-_tting material may not be worn in 6th through 12th grade unless covered by shorts that meet dress code or are part of an athletic or cheerleader uniform,” the current code states. Tights are becoming more of an issue, Kirby said, because of girls being unable to find shorts that meet the dress code. Kirby said he was _ne with whatever the board decided but as a father of girls, he said he believes the girls should be allowed to wear tights. “We’ve had that discussion in my home previously and my daughters argued saying, ‘Why can’t we wear tights?’” Kirby said. “I told them it’s not part of the dress code. I said I would bring it to you for the kids but it’s your decision.” Board President Frank Hefner said he had mixed emotions about the tights issue, saying, “Certain people don’t need to be wearing tights.” “Iwishparentswould do more policing of what their children wear at home,” he said. Board Secretary Travis Thorne said in this day and age, the board needed to be more lenient. “In 2024, we need to be more lenient and focus more on what’s inside a person than outside,” Thorne said. A final decision, and the entire student handbook, is expected to be made at the board’s July meeting.
