NEW BREMEN, OH (WLIO) - The longest-running picnic in Auglaize County returns yet for another year Friday in New Bremen!. The New Bremen Firemen's Picnic kicked off Friday afternoon with the "Firemen's Memorial 5K Fun Run," along with food and beverages. Since 1921, the firemen's picnic has been a chance for the New Bremen German Township Fire Department to connect with the community they serve. While building the family atmosphere, the picnic also helps raise funds to support the fire department, allowing firefighters to strengthen their equipment and services in the event a neighbor needs help.
Troops in Town brings military history to life during Celina Lake Festival
CELINA, OH (WLIO) - During the Celina Lake Festival, make sure to stop by Harbor Point State Park for a living history lesson. Reenactors for "Troops in Town" will be out Saturday and Sunday with historic vehicles, weapons, and more, ready to teach people of all ages anything they'd like to know about the life of a World War II soldier. You can walk through the troops' camps and talk to the men and women in uniform, and there will also be child-sized weapons and helmets for kids' photo ops. Reenactors hope the experience leaves everyone with a greater appreciation for what our veterans went through by seeing both their living conditions and realistic battles.

The Lima Fire Department welcomes five new firefighters
LIMA, OH (WLIO) - The Lima Fire Department is building up its ranks as five new firefighters were sworn in. Mayor Sharetta Smith doing the honors as family and friends watch their loved ones take the oath to a career with the Lima Fire Department. Sworn in were Matthew Baker, Taryn Hutchinson, Levi Probst, Jacob Schwarzman, and Alex Walker. These firefighters are the first to finish a probationary year of service before being sworn in. Chief Andy Heffner says this is a new process he believes will benefit the department.
"Christmas in July" brings holiday fun to downtown Lima
LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Lima organizations gather downtown to show kids a merry time. For several years, The Meeting Place on Market, alongside partners like the Lima Public Library and YES FM, has put on "Christmas in July." The cafe had plenty of festive drinks and desserts for sale, and there were lots of free activities for kids like pottery decorating, making your own snow, and holiday coloring pages. Families also listened to live Christmas music. The event is just one way Lima's nonprofits and businesses work together to give back to the kids in the community.
Teens can get free advanced driver training to help keep them safe behind the wheel
LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Allen County has seen a large percentage of young drivers getting into car accidents, and a training session is being offered to help with that problem. Coinciding with the "100 Deadliest Days" period of fatal driving, the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Ohio Traffic Safety Office are teaming up to teach young drivers some valuable lessons for when they're behind the wheel. It will be a free 'advanced' training session covering scenarios like skid recovery, anti-lock braking systems, and other skills with a licensed instructor on a closed course.

Temporary office changes due to construction at the Lima Municipal Building
LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Construction at the Lima Municipal Building has created some changes for offices and entry points. To enter the building, you will need to go to the far door on the east side of the building. This is normally the back entrance, but for the next three months, it will be the main entrance. There will be someone there to help you get to the tax department and 3rd-floor offices.
Allen County Agriculture Hall of Fame honors class of 2024
LIMA, OH (WLIO) - A banquet Thursday night honored some of the most influential people in Ohio's biggest industry. Five individuals were inducted into the Allen County Agriculture Hall of Fame for their decades of success and hard work. All proceeds from the evening's ticket sales are donated to the Allen County Junior Fair, a program many inductees participated in themselves and continue to support today.
Lima NAACP holds meeting on lead abatement licensing
LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Area residents getting educated on the issue of lead in Allen County homes and what they can do to help. The NAACP held a training session on Friday, showing people what steps to take in order to get their lead abatement license. The class was led by Keith Lockhart, a liaison and contractor for the Ohio Department of Development. Those with a lead abatement license will be certified to properly inspect and remove lead from homes in materials like paint on walls and in window frames. Lead has been shown to cause a long list of health problems. Organizers say with such a serious potential danger, it's important to educate, train, and certify local residents so they can fix these problems before it's too late.
