Did tornado touch down in Bucks County? When will power come back on in Upper Black Eddy

Thousands are still without power in Bucks County on Wednesday after a brief but powerful thunderstorm tore through the region Tuesday evening. Upper Bucks seemed to be hit hardest, and one family saw two trees crash down on their home.

Parts of Durham Township may be in the dark until Friday night, according to the township's Facebook page. Other areas of Upper Bucks can expect to see power restored throughout the day Wednesday, according to estimates provided by PPL.

“It had started raining, and all of a sudden the wind started to pick up and I got a bad feeling and hightailed it to the basement. I just made it down there when the first tree hit our house and then I heard the second tree hit,” said Marcia Nadeau, who lives in a ranch home on a 10-acre wooded lot on Marienstein Road in Upper Black Eddy.

When will my power come back on?

More than 2,000 buildings remained without power in Upper Bucks County on Wednesday morning. County officials said restoration may not occur until Friday at 11 p.m. for some residents, according to a Ready Bucks County public alert.

Palisades Regional Fire Rescue ’s Station 49 at 249 Durham Road in Ottsville, Station 94 at 49 Park Drive East in Nockamixon and Station 40 at 3010 PA-212 in Springtown are open Wednesday to those needing power or water for their family and pets. Station 40 in Springtown will only be open until 5 p.m.

Additional cooling and charging stations can be found at the following locations:

    • Nockamixon Township Building: 589 Lake Warren Road, Upper Black Eddy; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    • Colonial Woods Campground: 545 Lonely Cottage Road, Upper Black Eddy; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    • Riegelsville Borough Hall: 615 Easton Road, Riegelsville

Was it a tornado in Bucks County Pa?

The wind damage was caused not by a tornado, but a microburst, according to Ray Martin at the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, New Jersey.

The thunderstorm that rolled in with cool air Tuesday evening dropped extremely quickly, due to the excessive heat in the area. This led to widespread wind damage.

Tinicum Township Police Department reported multiple road closures Tuesday night, as downed trees and telephone poles scattered the area. An alert from Bucks County asked motorists to avoid Upper Black Eddy and Erwinna and said crews were enroute to clear damage.

"Tinicum Township has significant damage to major power lines, and substations following last night storm. Several roadways in the Erwinna and Upper Black Eddy area are in impassable," the message read.

In Upper Black Eddy, residents took to Facebook Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, sharing the toll of last night's damaging winds, including Nadeau's property on Marienstein Road that sustained severe damage when multiple trees were uprooted.

The two large oak trees, which Nadeau said were about 4-feet in diameter at the base, had fallen through the roof, causing the ceiling to come down in three rooms and water damage throughout the home. Around the property, she said several more trees were uprooted and a few had been snapped.

"We’re probably going to be displaced for a while," she added.

Others shared photos depicting streets, like Rock Ridge and Boulder roads, covered in debris and tree snapped in half at their trunks.

Another Bucks County storm could hit tonight

A similar storm could hit the same area today, according to the National Weather Service.

Bucks and Montgomery counties are under an excessive heat warning, with a heat index that could make it feel like 105 degrees outside. There is also a chance of thunderstorms early this evening. Wind is the most common culprit for thunderstorm-related damage, Martin said.

The heat warning is in effect through 8 tonight, and the weather service cautioned that "heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events."

Officials urged residents to hydrate, wear light clothing outside, limit outdoor activities and never leave children or pets unattended in hot cars. "Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes," the NWS said.

Bucks County has been under an excessive heat warning since Monday. The heat is expected to break Wednesday night, with highs in the 80s and low 90s for the rest of the week.
