National Guard Assisting with Flood Cleanup
(story provided by Radio Iowa) Members of the Iowa Air National Guard 185th Refueling Wing and the 132nd Wing have sent equipment and manpower to areas needing help with the removal of flood debris. Iowa Guard spokesperson, Jackie Schmillen (Smill-en), says the Sioux City based 185th is helping in Woodbury, Cherokee, Ida and Buena Vista Counties. While the 132nd based in Des Moines is in the Iowa Great Lakes region.

I am writing with important plea for help. The recent flooding in Buena Vista County has left many homes, businesses and communities in a state of devastation. Homes have been submerged businesses destroyed and families displaced. The scenes of destruction affecting our neighbors in northern Buena Vista County are overwhelming.
Farmland leasing meeting in Storm Lake on August 6
Iowa State University and Buena Vista County Extension and Outreach office will host a meeting on Aug. 6, beginning at 9 a.m. The location is at the Buena Vista County Extension office at 701 Seneca St., Storm Lake. The meeting will last approximately 2½ hours and will be facilitated by Alexis Stevens, farm and agriculture business management specialists with ISU Extension and Outreach. The discussion will focus on various methods to determine a fair 2024 cash rental rate and the importance of good tenant/landlord communications. Emphasis will be placed on recent returns to Iowa Cash Rented Land and the 2024 Iowa Cash Rental Rate Survey. Pre-registration is required by Aug. 5, and the registration fee of $20 can be paid at the door. Participants will receive a 100-page booklet and meeting handouts designed to assist landowners, tenants, and other agri-business professionals with issues related to farmland ownership, management, and leasing arrangements. A big news week
It was all hands on deck this week as the staffs of the Times Pilot and our sister publication, the Chronicle Times in Cherokee, worked to cover one of the biggest news events in our area’s history — the devastating flooding of Sioux Rapids, Linn Grove and Peterson in northern Buena Vista County, and neighboring Cherokee.
