    Flash flood warning issued for parts of upstate NY

    The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued a flash flood warning for parts of Western New York as storms roll into the area from the Midwest.

    The flash flood warning is in effect until 8:15 p.m. for:

    • East central Erie County
    • Southern Genesee County
    • Northwestern Wyoming County

    The Weather Service warning comes after Weather Service radar detected thunderstorms capable of producing heavy rain across the warning area, with 1.5 to 2 inches of rain falling. An additional half-inch of rain is possible for the region, with flash flooding ongoing or expected to begin soon.

    A second flash flood warning until 9 p.m. was issued for:

    • Southeastern Genesee County
    • Northern Livingston County
    • Southern Monroe County
    • Northwestern Ontario County
    • Northeastern Wyoming County

    Areas expected to experience flash flooding of creeks, streams, urban areas, highways, streets and other areas with poor drainage and low-lying areas include:

    • Batavia
    • East Aurora
    • Darien Lake State Park
    • Marilla
    • Le Roy
    • Bennington
    • Attica
    • Varysburg
    • Wales Center
    • Billington Heights
    • Elma Center
    • Stafford
    • Sheldon
    • Alexander
    • Dale
    • Bethany Center
    • Cowlesville
    • East Bethany
    • South Wales

    Areas covered under the second warning include:

    • Geneseo
    • Letchworth State Park
    • Henrietta
    • Perry
    • Warsaw
    • Avon
    • Mount Morris
    • Victor
    • Honeoye Falls
    • Pavilion
    • Caledonia
    • Lima
    • Scottsville
    • Mendon
    • Rush
    • York
    • West Bloomfield
    • Livonia
    • Covington
    • Leicester

    Preparedness actions

    The Weather Service recommends not attempting to cross flooded roads; most flood deaths happen in vehicles. Find an alternate route when driving through hilly areas where roads may have low water crossings.
