Bills training camp is just a few days away. To get you ready, we will preview one position group each day between now and the first practice at St. John Fisher. We’ll break down each position’s strengths, weaknesses and what single player or factor will most swing the outlook of that spot for 2024.

We start where you should always start with any team: at quarterback.

    Strength: Josh Allen

If Pat Mahomes is the god of current NFL quarterbacks, Josh Allen is likely the best of the mere mortals, even if he has a few divine powers of his own.

Allen has now consistently succeeded with three different coordinators. He repeatedly produces evil giggle-level highlights with his arm and his legs. He is the only QB to be top-3 in total touchdowns each of the last four seasons.

The Bills are indeed in a good place with him leading the charge.

    Weakness: Depth

When Mitch Trubisky last arrived in Buffalo, he was a former number two overall pick with multiple playoff starts. He’s still all that, but he’s now most recently the worst quarterback on a depth chart that included Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph.

There will be serious doubt if Trubisky has to be the starter for an extended period, especially without certainty about what else this offense has to lean on.

    X-Factor: Working the Offense

Allen is known for his incredible ability to make big plays. He constantly makes something out of nothing. However, there are times when he thinks a called play is nothing a bit too soon.

Some of that was understandable because his receivers last season could not separate, but he did not let the offense work for him enough.

If the Bills truly embrace the ‘we don’t need a wide receiver one’ build, Allen likely needs more point guard-esque distribution and less hero ball.

There’s no question it can happen. With Allen, capability is never a problem. The question is willingness and patience.
