TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A Florida father was charged with child neglect after his 15-month-old daughter overdosed on marijuana over the weekend, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office said.

On Sunday, deputies responded to a Bunnell home after a man said his niece’s child, who was visiting her dad, had to be taken to a hospital for medical treatment.

It was later discovered that the girl was hospitalized for ingesting marijuana that her dad, Cody Spiegelhalter, 26, left out at the residence.

Deputies arrived at the home to speak to Spieglehalter, finding the home to be covered in garbage, dog feces and urine, along with exposed nails and plumbing, and no working A/C.

The father told officials he had rolled a marijuana cigarette and set it down to use the bathroom. When he got back, he said his daughter had eaten most of it and began having medical issues, so he took her to the hospital.

In the home, deputies found loose marijuana scattered all over, “within reach of a toddler,” along with mushroom and THC wax.

The child’s current condition is unknown.

Spieglehalter was arrested for child neglect without great bodily harm and taken to a nearby jail on no bond.

“This could have had a tragic ending. Thankfully, this child was removed from this very unhealthy environment,” Sheriff Staly said. “Based on his irresponsibility, this guy will never be Father of the Year or even for a day, and he will be spending time at the Green Roof Inn where he belongs.”
