Vermont State Police said they have found human remains they believe to be those of an 82-year-old Enosburgh woman whose disappearance last week they termed to be “suspicious.”

Police stated in a press release late Sunday night that while searching for Roberta Martin they found the remains in a wooded area off Sand Hill Road in Enosburgh at around 11 a.m. that day.

Sand Hill Road intersects Butternut Hollow Road, where Martin has lived for the past 24 years, according to police.

The remains will be sent to the Vermont Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington to confirm identity as well as to determine the cause and manner of death.

Police said late Sunday night no one was in custody related to the investigation.

Authorities executed a search warrant Friday at a house and property adjacent to Martin’s residence, according to a state police press release issued Friday night.

State police have declined to say what has led them to believe that Martin’s death is suspicious.

Maj. Dan Trudeau, head of the state police criminal division, said at a press briefing Thursday that he couldn’t reveal details related to evidence in the investigation.

“It certainly is suspicious because we haven’t found her, she’s not home which is unlike her normal life patterns where she’s generally in touch with her family often,” Trudeau said at that time. “Again, I can’t talk about some things that we’re seeing at the house.”

According to state police, Roberta Martin last had contact with her family by phone at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday and has not been seen or heard from since.

Neighbors had gone to her Butternut Hollow Road residence to check on her around 11:55 a.m. Wednesday, police said. After learning that she was not at the residence the neighbors reported her missing to authorities, according to police.
