Secret Service said former President Donald Trump is "safe" after a shooting at a campaign rally.
A Trump spokesperson told BI the former president is "fine" and "being checked out" at a local medical facility.
Secret Service said a suspected shooter was killed, and a rally attendee has also died.
Donald Trump is doing "fine" following a shooting at a Saturday rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, a Trump spokesperson told Business Insider in an email.
The former president was whisked off the stage by his security detail after gunshots were heard.
"President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act," the spokesperson said. "He is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility. More details will follow."
A Secret Service spokesperson said on X that the former president is "safe and being evaluated" after "a suspected shooter fired multiple shots toward the stage from an elevated position outside of the rally venue."
The suspected shooter is dead and a spectator at the event was killed in the shooting, according to the Secret Service.
"US Secret Service personnel neutralized the shooter, who is now deceased," the Secret Service's statement continued. "US Secret Service quickly responded with proactive measures and the former president is safe and being evaluated. One spectator was killed, two spectators were critically injured. The incident is currently under investigation and the Secret Service has formally notified the Federal Bureau of Investigation."
Trump said in a post on social media that a bullet had pierced the top part of his ear.
"I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania," Trump said in a post on Truth Social. "Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured."
"It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country," his statement continued. "Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead. I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!"
President Joe Biden issued a statement in the wake of the shooting, saying he had been briefed on the matter.
"I have been brief on the shooting at Donald Trump's rally in Pennsylvania," Biden's statement said. "I'm grateful to hear that he's safe and doing well. I'm praying for him and his family and for all those who were at the rally, as we await further information."
"Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety. There's no place for this kind of violence in America," the statement continued. "We must unite as one nation to condemn it."
"It's sick. It's sick," Biden said. "It's one of the reasons we have to unite this country. We cannot allow for this to be happening. We cannot be like this. We cannot condone this."
