Donald Trump responded to a shooting at his rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, during which gunshots rang out and the former president was rushed off the stage bleeding from an injury to his right ear.

“I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania. Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured,” the former president added.

The Secret Service announced that Trump was “safe” after the incident, and that the shooter and one rally attendee were dead, while two additional rally attendees were in critical condition.

President Joe Biden issued a televised statement responding to the shooting from Rehoboth, Delaware. “There’s no place for this kind of violence in America,” Biden said. “We must unite as one nation to condemn it.” Biden added that he was continuing to receive briefings on the matter, and was planning to reach out directly to the former president.

Multiple shots were fired about ten minutes into Trump’s speech in Butler, Pennsylvania. The former president seemed to clutch at his ear, before diving to the ground as multiple Secret Service agents rushed to cover him with their bodies and escort him off the stage. When Trump stood up, blood was visible on his ear and cheek. He pumped his fist to the crowd before agents ushered him off the stage and into a black car.

One audience member was killed, and two others were hospitalized with critical injuries.

On Sunday, the FBI identified the shooter as 20-year-old Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, resident Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was killed at the scene of the rally by law enforcement officials.
