(The Center Square) – The would-be assassin of former President Donald Trump during a Saturday evening rally in Butler, Pa., was “neutralized” by the United States Secret Service.

The U.S Secret Service released a statement Saturday evening confirming the suspected shooter had been killed by agents after multiple shots were fired toward the stage from an “elevated position.”

“During former President Trump’s campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on the evening of July 13 at approximately 6:15 p.m., a suspected shooter fired multiple shots towards the stage from an elevated position outside of the rally venue. U.S. Secret Service personnel neutralized the shooter, who is now deceased,” Anthony Guglielmi, chief of communications for the U.S. Secret Service, wrote in the statement.

“U.S. Secret Service quickly responded with protective measures and the former president is safe and being evaluated. One spectator was killed, two spectators were critically injured. The incident is currently under investigation and the Secret Service has formally notified the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” the statement concluded.

Multiple news outlets are reporting an AR-15 rifle was recovered, with eyewitnesses saying they saw a man crawling on a roof.

The U.S. Secret Service has not released the identity of the suspected shooter or a description.
