    Secret Service statement in full after Donald Trump assassination attempt at Pennsylvania rally

    The US Secret Service confirmed the suspected shooter who targeted Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania , is dead.

    After the shooting, which is now being investigated as an assassination attempt on the former president, Anthony Guglielmi with the US Secret Service wrote on X, formerly Twitter: "During former President Trump 's campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on the evening of July 13th at approximately 6:15 p.m., a suspected shooter fired multiple shots towards the stage from an elevated position outside of the rally venue."

    The statement continued: " US Secret Service personnel neutralized the shooter, who is now deceased. US Secret Service quickly responded with protective measures and the former president is safe and being evaluated. One spectator was killed, two spectators were critically injured."

    The post concluded: "The incident is currently under investigation and the Secret Service has formally notified the Federal Bureau of Investigation." Anthony Guglielmi, chief communications officer and lead spokesman for the Secret Service, captioned the update: "Here is the latest information from our investigation. We are grateful to the Secret Service team and our law enforcement partners for their swift action. Our thoughts go out to the families affected by this tragedy."

    The update from the Secret Service comes as the 78-year-old politician was the target of a shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania that is now being investigated as an assassination attempt. As the former president spoke about his aspirations as president, shots rang through the audience. Trump was then seen clutching onto his ear and falling to the ground as Secret Service agents rushed to his aid.

    After the shooting, Trump was rushed to a nearby medical facility and later issued a statement himself and confirming that the bullet "pierced the upper part of my right ear." While Trump suffered minor injuries from the shooting two others were killed, including the suspected shooter, and a third was hospitalized and is currently in critical condition.
