National newsrooms were abuzz Saturday afternoon following an attempted shooting at a campaign rally held by former United States President Donald Trump.

During the event in Butler, Pennsylvania, several gunshots rang out while the former President spoke on stage. He appeared to grab his ear before falling on the ground. Secret Service agents then converged on Trump and rushed him offstage.

The gunman was killed by Secret Service. One attendee is dead, with one more in serious condition.

Now, local politicians are chiming in with their thoughts on the situation.

Texas District 21 Representative and Speaker of the House Dade Phelan issued the following statement:

“My thoughts and prayers are with President Trump and the other reported victims following this assassination attempt. This is a dark day in American history. There is simply no room for hate, violence, or the vitriolic rhetoric that leads to such actions in our political discourse. I commend the brave actions of the Secret Service and law enforcement for their swift response and commitment to protecting our leaders. We must unite as a nation to denounce such acts and uphold the values of peace and respect – may President Trump be back on his feet soon.”

U.S. Representative Brian Babin, who serves the 36th District of Texas, issued a statement via Facebook which read, “President Trump is wounded but defiant just like America. We will prevail to Make America Great Again. Join me in praying for President Trump.”

U.S. Representative Randy Weber of the 14th Congressional District also posted on Facebook, “Please take a moment and pray for President Trump. May GOD protect him.”

Trump said in a statement on his social media platform Truth Social that he was struck in the right ear by a bullet, but is otherwise okay.
