WASHINGTON – The FBI will be the "lead federal law enforcement agency" in the investigation of the shooting at former President Donald Trump's Pennsylvania political rally, the bureau said in a statement late Saturday.

Special agents from the FBI's Pittsburgh field office responded immediately to the incident, including members of its crisis response team as well as evidence response technicians, the statement said.

The former president is safe after a shooting at the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania Saturday evening. Trump was rushed off stage with blood dripping from his ear after several gunshots rang out. The incident is being investigated as an assassination attempt.

Trump's spokesperson, Steven Cheung, confirmed that Trump is "fine" but saw doctors at a nearby medical facility. The shooting comes less than two days before Republicans convene in Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention, during which Trump will be formally nominated as the party's nominee.

The FBI asked anyone with information that could help the investigation to call its tip line at 1-800-CALL-FBI.

House Speaker Mike Johnson and the House Oversight and Homeland Security Committees announced Saturday that they would conduct an investigation into the shooting. Both committees will summon Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle and other officials from the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security to speak about how the event unfolded.

"The American people deserve to know the truth," Johnson said in a statement.
