July 14 (UPI) -- The man who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump has been identified by the FBI as Thomas Matthew Crooks.

The FBI, in a brief statement , said Sunday the 20-year-old Crooks was from Bethel Park, a suburb of Pittsburgh about an hour south of Butler, Pa., where the former president was holding a campaign rally.

"This remains an active and ongoing investigation," the FBI said, encouraging anyone with videos or information about the shooting to come forward.

In an update late Sunday, the FBI said two "suspicious devices" were found during a search of Crooks' home and vehicle and that they have since been rendered safe and sent to the FBI's laboratory for evaluation.

It added that while its investigation into the shooting indicates Crooks acted alone, it continues to "conduct logical investigative activity to determine if there were any co-conspirators associated with this attack."

No motive for the shooting has yet been identified, but the FBI said they are working to establish the sequences of events and Crooks' movements leading up to the shooting.

Interviews were being conducted, leads were being investigated and evidence was being collected and reviewed, it said.

Crooks was a registered Republican, voter registration information reviewed by UPI shows. But records from the Federal Election Commission show he donated $15 to the Progressive Turnout Project through the Democratic donation platform ActBlue in January 2021.

Bethel Park Police advised Sunday that roads were closed in the area, likely to protect Crooks' family in the aftermath of the shooting.

Trump was shot Saturday minutes into his speech at the Pennsylvania election rally. He said Sunday on his Truth Social social media platform that a bullet had "pierced" the upper part of his right year.

Crooks was killed by Secret Service moments after attempting to assassinate Trump.

Corey Comperatore, 50, died in the shooting after having dove on his wife and two daughters to protect them from the gunfire. Two others -- 57-year-old David Dutch and 74-year-old James Copenhaver -- were injured in the shooting.

The FBI said the AR-15-style semiautomatic rifle used in the shooting was legally purchased and that Crooks was not known to it prior to the assassination attempt.
