Explosive devices were discovered in the vehicle of the gunman who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump during his Saturday rally in Pennsylvania , according to a report.

Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, was shot dead after firing rifle rounds at the former president during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday.

His car was located not far from the Trump rally, sources told the Wall Street Journal.

Police received numerous reports of suspicious packages around the area where the shooter was, leading them to send out bomb technicians, authorities informed the Journal.

Sources added officials continued to ensure the scene was safe well into the night before searching Crooks' family home.

New details are emerging about the shooter, who was from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania - a borough located one hour and 15 minutes from Butler by car.

Two law enforcement officials told Associated Press investigators believe the weapon was bought by his father at least six months ago.

The FBI is working to establish how Crooks obtained the gun and a possible motive. He is the sole focus of the investigation, officials said.
