The man behind the attempted assassination of Donald Trump on Saturday reportedly purchased 50 rounds of ammunition just hours before the shooting at a rally in Pennsylvania . Thomas Matthew Crooks, aged 20, was shot and killed by Trump's security team shortly after he began firing at the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

A report from CNN states that Crooks bought the ammunition from a local gun store. Trump revealed that he was hit in the ear when Crooks unleashed a barrage of bullets at the rally on Saturday evening.

Secret Service agents were responsible for fatally shooting Crooks, reports the Express US . The young man from Pennsylvania launched his attack from a high vantage point outside the venue, resulting in the death of one person attending the rally and leaving two spectators in critical condition.

Meanwhile, the attempted assassination of Trump on Saturday has propelled a 21-year-old hip-hop song into the 'top 10' on US iTunes. During a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, Trump's ear was '' grazed '' by a bullet fired by a would-be assassin.

The gunman, named as 20-year-old lone wolf Thomas Matthew Crooks , was shot dead by law enforcement agents on a roof more than 130 yards away, where his body was later seen covered in blood. Trump was treated at a hospital before being discharged and flying back to New Jersey that evening.

Despite the severity of his injuries, he survived and went on to have a successful career in music and business.
