While Secret Service members dove onto former President Donald Trump on Saturday after shots rang out at his Pennsylvania rally, Corey Comperatore dove onto his family, protecting them while being fatally struck in the process.

Days after the shooting that claimed Corey Comperatore’s life, his wife, Helen Comperatore, shared more about her husband and his final words as he paid the ultimate price to keep those he loved safe.

In an exclusive interview with the New York Post , Helen Comperatore shared that the last thing her husband said to them before he died was, “Get down!”

“He’s my hero,” Helen Comperatore said from her Sarver, Pennsylvania home on Monday. “He just said, ‘Get down!’ That was the last thing he said.”

Corey Comperatore, 50, was a former chief of the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company. He had attended the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday with his family when the gunman, now identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, opened fire.

The bullet grazed Trump’s ear, wounded two others, David Dutch, 57, and James Copenhaver, 54, and claimed the life of the father.

“Me and the kids were all there as a family,” she told the Post. “He was just excited. It was going to be a nice day with the family.”

“It was a bad day,” she added.

Helen Comperatore shared that the two were close to celebrating their 29th wedding anniversary and had been childhood sweethearts.

“He was a simple man, but he put his wife and kids first all the time. I did nothing here,” she said at her home to the Post. “I didn’t lift a finger. He did everything.”

In the hours that passed, Helen Comperatore received condolences from politicians, world leaders, celebrities, and more as the world continued to stay in a state of shock after the shooting.

Helen Comperatore even shared with the Post that she received a personal call from President Joe Biden, but decided not to answer.

“I didn’t talk to Biden. I didn’t want to talk to him,” Helen Comperatore said. “My husband was a devout Republican, and he would not have wanted me to talk to him.”

She went on to say that she had not heard from Trump, but the words from Biden were not welcome.

“I don’t have any ill will towards Joe Biden,” she said. “I’m not one of those people that gets involved in politics. I support Trump, that’s who I’m voting for, but I don’t have ill will towards Biden.

“He didn’t do anything to my husband. A 20-year-old despicable kid did.”

A GoFundMe has been set up by her family to help them following the tragedy. At the time of publication, it had raised nearly $1.1 million.

“The donations that are coming in across the community and across the country, it’s more than I can even imagine,” she said. “It’s more than I can fathom, but he deserves it all. He deserves everything.”
