Reps. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) introduced a new resolution Tuesday that would honor a rally attendee who was killed during an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump over the weekend.

Former local fire chief Corey Comperatore was fatally shot while protecting his family from bullets after a shooter opened fire at a rally Saturday in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump confirmed he was shot in the right ear in a post to Truth Social, and two other rally attendees, James Copenhaver, 74, and David Dutch, 57, were also injured. Both were in stable condition as of Sunday night.

"Corey Comperatore should not have lost his life exercising his First Amendment right by going to a political rally," Gaetz said in a statement. "There is no place for political violence in America! Corey’s selfless and courageous actions exemplify the highest standards of bravery and devotion to both his family and his country.

"This resolution seeks to commemorate his extraordinary bravery and unwavering commitment to public service after he heroically sacrificed his life while shielding his family from gunfire intended for the President Trump," Gaetz continued.

The resolution would also condemn political violence "in all its forms," according to the bill text .

“Corey Comperatore led his life keeping his community safe and spent the last moments of his life shielding his family from danger," Moskowitz said in a statement. "No matter what side of the aisle you’re on, those are the brave qualities we should all salute. He deserved the ability to go to a political rally and return home. I hope that my colleagues will join us in honoring his sacrifice."

Both Moskowitz and Gaetz condemned political violence in statements and interviews quickly after the shooting. Many Democrats and Republicans have echoed calls for unity , but the Democratic National Committee has resorted back to counter-messaging as the Republican National Convention continues for the second day.
