Palma Romero, 99, died June 20, 2024, at her home, north of Cotopaxi, where she had lived for 64 years. She was born March 25, 1925, in Withee, Wisconsin, to David and Marjorie (Strain) Coen, but she grew up in Finley, North Dakota. She was the oldest of six children, with brothers Doug, Lyle, Curtis, and Allen and sister Joyce.

Plea deal offered to Penrose funeral home co-owners
A plea deal has been offered to the married couple who owned the Return to Nature Funeral Home in Penrose where 190 improperly stored bodies were discovered last fall. Jon and Carie Hallford are facing hundreds of charges in Colorado including abuse of a corpse, forgery and money laundering. The investigation into the funeral home began in early October 2023 when neighbors reported a foul odor to the Fremont County Sheriff's Office. Canon City PD recovers fentanyl, meth, & heroin during traffic stop
CANON CITY, Colo. (KRDO) - The Canon City Police Department (CCPD) reported Tuesday that they recovered a large amount of narcotics during a traffic stop in May. The CCPD said a traffic stop was conducted on the night of May 26, 2024, at 9th St. and Whipple Ave. The driver was identified as 34-year-old Angelina Madison. She was driving on a suspended license, police said.

Safe Routes to School Grant
Sidewalk upgrade and repair work is scheduled to begin along North 9th Street on Monday, July 8, 2024. The project will see the installation of ADA compliant sidewalk ramps and repair of the sidewalks along 9th Street, primarily in the area between Washington Avenue and Clover Avenue. The project is expected to have minimal impacts to traffic, with work primarily completed by closing the parking areas along 9th Street and the side streets. Short duration closures of driveways and side street approaches will be needed to allow time for sidewalk concrete to cure. Work is scheduled to take roughly three to four months to complete.
