The U.S. economy grew at a 2.8% annual rate in the second quarter, outpacing expectations. The gross domestic product snapshot published Thursday showed second-quarter economic expansion doubled the first quarter's 1.4% rate. The growth was driven primarily by increases in consumer spending for goods and services, private inventory investment and nonresidential fixed investment.
