The Caledonia baseball squad kicked off the year with a scrimmage against the Spring Grove Lions baseball team Thursday, March 28. A quick venue change saw the scrimmage come to the Caledonia High School baseball field, and the teams were able to fit in a full game that afternoon.

One of the impressive parts of the scrimmage was the pitching of Garret Konz, Reid Klug and Will Allen. All pitchers had great velocity early on and mixed in effective out pitches as well. Will Allen had an effective breaking ball out pitch that caught many batters off guard.

Although the season is early, the Lions struggled to make solid contact throughout the contest, which is a good sign for Caledonia going into the spring season.

At the plate, the Warriors displayed all the hallmarks of early season hitting — slower bat speeds, a lot of opposite field hits, and, of course, the colder weather didn’t do any favors either. Over the course of the season, the players' bat speed should increase just through practice and play time, which will lead to hits to all fields. Most of the players seem to have a good command of where the zone is, which is a boon for the Warriors early in the season.

Fielding was pretty par for the course in the scrimmage, with the pitching handling most of the work. The usual pop-up for the infield was little to worry about this early in the campaign.

Overall, if the scrimmage is anything to go by, the Warriors will look to be competitive this year, with a deep pitching group, plus a solid backstop in Hunter Goetzinger, who is committed to playing for Augsburg University after his high school career. The hitting should come around, as they work through the season and the weather gets warmer.

For those who want to cheer on the squad this week, next up is the opening game, a matchup with the Fillmore Central Falcons at Fillmore Central on Tuesday, April 2 at 5 p.m. There is also a home matchup against Cotter Schools on Thursday, April 4 at 5 p.m.
