Law enforcement officers in Racine County shot and killed a 37-year-old man Wednesday at a Caledonia park after the man fired a gun, authorities say.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice announced they are investigating the incident.

The shooting took place at 9:47 a.m. following a report that a man was at Cliffside Park, 7320 Michna Road, lying face down on a path and was not moving, the Racine County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. The caller said he did not feel safe getting any closer to the man.

A sheriff's deputy and two officers from the Caledonia Police Department were called to the scene. Upon arrival, the sheriff's office said the man discharged his weapon.

Law enforcement took cover and planned a tactical response. The Mount Pleasant Police Department, Wisconsin State Patrol, and Caledonia Fire Department responded to the scene.

"Despite numerous efforts to negotiate with the subject and resolve the incident without the use of deadly force, the subject took actions that forced law enforcement officers from multiple jurisdictions to discharge their firearms striking the subject," the sheriff's office said.

The sheriff's office said medical personnel provided immediate care to the man but he died at the park.

Authorities said the man had ties to the city of Racine and the village of Mount Pleasant.

The DOJ said involved law enforcement are on administrative leave and were wearing body cameras during the incident. The agency will make that footage available at a later date.
