CALERA, Ala. ( WIAT ) — As of Monday night, just over 15,000 Alabama Power customers remain without electricity after the South was hit with severe storms.

Calera residents Karman and Lauriann Loveless say the electricity at their home went out early Monday morning.

“The storm itself woke me up and then it went click and that was it,” Loveless said.

Going almost ten hours without electricity or air conditioning is not exactly how the two planned to spend Memorial Day. Instead, they spent the day trying to keep themselves and their furry rescue pets cool the best they could until their power was restored.

“Making lemonade out of lemons. Go to Walmart, go to Cracker Barrel,” Loveless said.

The Loveless family weren’t the only ones in their neighborhood adjusting to the challenges a power outage during a holiday weekend presented.

“It’s been a challenge, but you know we make the best of it do what you gotta do,” resident Krystal Boman said.

Boman said the electricity at her home went out around 5 a.m. Monday. Soon after, she and her neighbors reached out to Alabama Power to report the outages.

“They did specify that you know that they knew that it was out because of the storms, and they said they had the crews working. I mean, we just have to roll with the punches at this point,” Boman said.

For the Bomans, rolling with the punches means staying outside under the shade and spending time this Memorial Day with each other.

“We know that it’s a holiday, so we just have to be grateful that you know that we’re still able to be here and to be able to just come outside and enjoy each other,” Boman said.
