Jacksonville, AL – To commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks, the City of Jacksonville will hold a solemn memorial service on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at the Jacksonville City Cemetery. The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. and is open to the public, offering an opportunity for silent reflection and remembrance of those who lost their lives in the tragic events.

The ceremony will be led by the Jacksonville State University ROTC, who will present the colors at the start of the service. At 8:37 a.m., a flower-laying ceremony will take place to mark the exact moment when the Pentagon was struck in Central Standard Time. The ceremony will continue in silence until 9:50 a.m., when the flags will be removed, symbolizing the collapse of the Pentagon at that time.

There will be no speakers at the event, as organizers ask attendees to remain in silence as a sign of respect for the nearly 3,000 people who perished in the attacks, including 343 firefighters, 60 law enforcement officers, and 13 paramedics. The memorial also honors those who have since died from illnesses related to their efforts in rescue and recovery operations.

Visitors are welcome to attend and quietly reflect throughout the hour and twenty minutes during which the wreath and flags will be presented. Attendees can come and go as they wish, participating in the silent tribute.

    Event Details:

    • Date: Wednesday, September 11, 2024
    • Time: 8:30 a.m. – 9:50 a.m.

This annual silent memorial serves as a heartfelt reminder of the sacrifice made by first responders and civilians on that fateful day.
