    John Mayall dies aged 90 at California home as tributes paid to 'Godfather of British Blues'

    The Godfather of British Blues has died at the age of 90.

    John Mayall, the blues and rock musician who carries the title, is credited with helping launch the iconic careers of blues legends such as the late Eric Clapton through his band John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers. It was revealed that John died on Monday in a statement that was shared on his official Instagram account.

    "It is with heavy hearts that we bear the news that John Mayall passed away peacefully in his California home yesterday, July 22, 2024, surrounded by his loving family," the post read. "Health issues that forced John to end his epic touring career have finally led to peace for one of this world's greatest road warriors. John Mayall gave us ninety years of tireless efforts to educate, inspire and entertain."

    The statement celebrated his legacy, mentioning that his "raw honesty, connection, community and playing of his will continue to affect the music and culture we experience today, and for generations to come." Additionally, he was honored for his accomplishments.

    "An appointed OBE (Officer of the British Empire), 2x Grammy-nominated artist and recent inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, John is survived by his 6 children, Gaz, Jason, Red, Ben, Zak and Samson, 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren," the statement ran down. "He is also surrounded with love by his previous wives, Pamela and Maggie, his devoted secretary, Jane, and his close friends. We, the Mayall family, cannot thank his fans and long-list of bandmembers enough for the support and love we were blessed to experience secondhand over the last six decades."

    Several of his fans overwhelmed his comment section with their condolences.

    "Such sad news, a true legend of music..an innovator and ambassador and an icon of British blues/rock and roll. John will be sadly missed by all those that loved him," one fan commented."He has left a massive legacy to indulge in, thank you for your lifetime of inspiration and passion. My condolences to his friends and family. You were truly one of the giants, now you can take your place with those that future generations will look to for inspiration. RIP Mr Mayall

    Another agreed: "Ugh what bad news, I'll always have wonderful memories of the shows I was able to attend and the spectacular music that will go on an on. Thank you for the amazing work." John is hailed as pioneering the blues in England in the late 1960s, and his band the Bluesbreakers produced star acts like Mick Fleetwood, founder of Fleetwood Mac, Mick Taylor, and John McVie in addition to Eric.

    John will be inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in October.
