    Cambridge baseball scores split in doubleheader against Pecatonica

    The Cambridge baseball team split a doubleheader against Pecatonica, the No. 7th ranked team in Division 5, on Saturday, May 18 at Pecatonica High School.

    In the first game, Pecatonica scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to earn a 4-2 win. Carson Kurschner hit a sacrifice bunt to score Jameson Johnson for the go-ahead run. Also in the inning, Lukas Rue hit an RBI single to score Trevor Doescher.

    Johnson pitched a complete game for Pecatonica, recording a double play in the seventh to clinch the win. Rue led Pecatonica with two RBIs.

    For Cambridge, senior Owen Bernhardt hit an RBI single in the first to score senior Marco Damiani. Damiani hit an RBI single in the fifth to score junior Kiefer Parish, which had tied the game at 2-2.

    Junior Clayton Stenjem pitched a complete game, recording six strikeouts in the loss.

    In the second game, sophomore Jett Horton earned the win on the mound and added three RBIs in the batter’s box during a 9-2 win.

    Horton hit a two-run single in the first that scored Bernhardt and Damiani. In the second, Horton drove in senior Carter Lund on an RBI single. Lund also had two RBIs, driving in Stenjem and junior Will Reese on a double in the second.

    Damiani also had two RBIs, while Bernhardt and senior Devin Schuchart both knocked in a run.

    Sophomore Cal Nottestad pitched over an inning of relief, recording two strikeouts. Nottestad took over for Horton after pitching 5 2/3 innings with six strikeouts.

    Cambridge is 14-5 on the season. The Blue Jays scored the No. 1 seed in the playoffs and will face the winner of Poynette/Wisconsin Heights at Cambridge High School at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28 in the regional semifinal.

    Cambridge 13, Marshall 0

    The Blue Jays hit three home runs in a 13-0 mercy-rule win over Marshall on Thursday, May 16 at Marshall High School.

    Junior Kiefer Parish hit a three-run homer in the second, scoring seniors Gavin Winslow and Brayden Lund.

    In the fourth, senior Owen Bernhardt hit a solo home run, while senior Carter Lund also belted a solo home run in the fifth.

    Also in the fifth, junior Clayton Stenjem hit a two-run double to score Parish and junior Will Reese.

    Carter Lund led the Blue Jays with four RBIs, while Parish added three RBIs. Brayden Lund, Bernhardt and Stenjem all recorded two RBIs. Bernhardt went 3x3 with a walk and two runs scored.

    Carter Lund pitched four innings for Cambridge, recording six strikeouts. Sophomore Jett Horton pitched the fifth, recording one strikeout.

    Cambridge finishes in first place in the Capitol South with a record of 9-1.

    Cambridge 6, Marshall 1

    With the Cambridge baseball team winning 6-1 against Marshall and Waterloo also losing 8-3 to New Glarus, the Blue Jays officially clinched the Capitol-South Conference title on Tuesday, May 14 at CHS.

    In the win against Marshall, junior Clayton Stenjem pitched six innings, allowing one unearned run. Stenjem recorded four strikeouts and allowed five hits.

    With the Cambridge pitching staff holding Marshall’s offense in check, the Blue Jays scored twice in the bottom of the first inning on two errors and did not look back.

    Stenjem scored junior Kiefer Parish on an error and senior Carter Lund scored on an error off the bat of senior Owen Bernhardt.

    Lund also drove in two runs on doubles, driving in senior Marco Damiani on a double in the third and plating Stenjem on a double in the fifth.

    Parish also drove in two runs, scoring sophomore Jett Horton and junior Nick Ellickson on a two-run single in the sixth. Lund pitched the seventh inning, retiring the Cardinals in order to clinch the win.
