    Cambridge track: Ava Williams qualifies in the 300 hurdles, girls 4x200 relay headed to state championships

    After not qualifying for the state track and field championships last year, Cambridge sophomore Ava Williams helped make sure the Cambridge track and field team didn’t suffer the same feat this year at the Division 3 Horicon Sectional on Thursday, May 23.

    Williams qualified in the 300-meter hurdles, taking fourth at 47.57 seconds.

    Williams, however, will not be going alone as the 4x200 relay team consisting of Williams, sophomore Tessa Schmude, sophomore Malina Schneider and freshman Jill Thompson also qualified for state with a fourth-place finish at 1:48.07.

    The four Blue Jays will compete at the WIAA Division 3 State Track and Field Championships held at UW-La Crosse. State will take place on Friday, May 31 and Saturday, June 1.

    The rest of the Cambridge track team wrapped up their season at the sectional. Williams (16.80) took fifth in the 100-meter hurdles. Sophomore Malina Schneider (47.69) ran fifth in the 300-meter hurdles.

    The 4x100 relay team of freshman Emillie Behm, junior Katherine Brown, senior Mya Lehmann and Schmude placed eighth at 53.25 seconds.

    The 4x400 relay team of Behm, freshman Tara Bettenhausen, senior Mara Brown and freshman Macy Robinson took 11th at 4:32.94.

    For the boys, junior Drew Holzhueter (15.74) ran sixth in the 110-meter hurdles. Holzhueter (42.43) also finished eighth in the 300-meter hurdles.

    Sophomore Owain Nelles (54.50) scored seventh in the 400-meter dash. Freshman Trevor Polster (11.84) ran ninth in the 100-meter dash finals.

    The 4x400 relay team of Holzhueter, junior Brian Hottman, Nelles and freshman Elias Reese took 10th at 3:38.05.

    The 4x100 relay team of sophomore Travis Colts, sophomore Oden Jaskolski, junior Kyle Polster and Trevor Polster were disqualified.

    The girls team finished 13th with 21 points. Deerfield won the sectional with 72 points.

    For the boys, the Blue Jays took 26th with six points. Cedar Grove-Belgium won the boys sectional with 47 points.

    Deerfield Regional

    Cambridge advanced to sectional competition in 12 events out of the Deerfield track and field regional with top-four finishes on Monday, May 20.

    Cambridge’s boys qualified in six events and took fifth.

    The 400 relay team of Travis Colts, Oden Jaskolski, Kyle Polster and Trevor Polster placed second in 46.23.

    Trevor Polster was third in the 100 in 11.92. Owain Nelles took third in the 400 in 54.31. Drew Holzhueter finished third in the 300 hurdles in 42.85 and fourth in the 110 high hurdles in 16.08.

    The 1,600 relay team of Holzhueter, Brian Hottman, Nelles and Elias Reese took fourth in 3:38.85.

    Cambridge girls made it through in six events, finishing fifth.

    The 400 relay team of Emillie Behm, Katherine Brown, Mya Lehmann and Tessa Schmude won in 53.81.

    The 800 relay team of Schmude, Malinda Schneider, Ava Williams and Jill Thompson placed third in 1:53.07.

    Tara Bettenhausen placed second in the 400 in 1:05.82.

    Williams and Schneider finished second and third, respectively, in the 300 hurdles in 48.44 and 50.04.

    Williams was fourth in the 100 meter dash in 17.10.

    The 1,600 relay team of Bettenhausen, Behm, Mara Brown and Macy Robinson took fourth in 4:29.59.
