Milam County Row Crop Tour set for June 28
The Milam County Row Crop Tour will take place on June 28. The event will begin with registration at 7:30 a.m. During the tour, participants will look through variety trials of corn, grain sorghum, and a RACE trial of cotton varieties. Dr. Ronnie Schnell, Associate Professor & Extension Specialist will discuss current issues in each crop as well as overview variety differences. Matthew Matocha, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Program Specialist at Stiles Farm will discuss weed and pest management through each as well. At the conclusion of the variety trial viewing, participants will head to the Buckholts Community Center and enjoy lunch provided by Thorndale Meat Market. This will be followed by a Milam County FSA update from Ruben Hernandez, Milam County Farm Service Agency Director. Dr. Mark Welch, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Economist, will then discuss current commodity market trends and updates. There will be two CEU hours provided for pesticide applicators; one in integrated pest management and one general CEU. Milam County 4-H wins big at Texas 4-H Roundup
Texas 4-H Roundup was held June 3-7, 2024, in College Station! We had many successes, and we are so excited to share these amazing results! Milam County 4-H Day Camp offered
We will have our 4-H Day Camp on June 28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. called FriYAY 4-H Day Camp. Cloverbuds will be from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. In the morning, activities will be geared toward cloverbuds (K-2nd) and then the afternoon will be geared for the older kids, 3rd grade to 12th grade. Activities include photography, science, cooking, arts and crafts and much more! Come join us! Lunch will be served for all kids attending. Museum’s D-Day recognition to feature 1947 Jeep
The 80th Anniversary of D-Day is fast approaching. On June 6, 2024, the Milam County Historical Museum will proudly feature its display of American Military memorabilia. Also, featured will be a restored 1947 Jeep in celebration of D-Day. The museum has many artifacts, uniforms, medals, letters, etc. in its permanent military collection. These valued treasures are from both World War I & II, Vietnam, the Korean Conflict, the Spanish-American War, and even the American Civil War. Milam County 4-H scholarship training to be held
Milam County 4-H members have received over $264,225 in scholarships in the past three years. We are super proud and want to keep this number climbing, so we will be hosting a 4-H scholarship training on June 10 at 6 p.m. at the Main Annex Conference Room of Milam County (806 N Crockett Avenue)! Thorndale’s playoff run comes to end
The Thorndale Bulldogs baseball team saw their playoff run end at the hands of the Ganado Indians in the Regional Semifinals last week. Thorndale was defeated by Ganado in the series 2-1 to bring their fantastic season to an end. Game 1 took place on Wednesday, May 22, in Hallettsville, and Thorndale lost 4-3. Stiles Farm Field Day set for June 11
The Stiles Farm Foundation Field Day will be held on June 11. Located at 5700 FM 1063 in Thrall, the event will feature outstanding educational information on a variety of topics. Dr. Jeff Savell, Vice Chancellor and Dean for Agriculture and Life Sciences at Texas A&M University will be discussing Texas Barbecue techniques that will be helpful for all who enjoy. Other topics will include soil and planter equipment interactions and profitable fertilizer decision making, John Deere See and Spray Technology, as well as a review of current research plots located at Stiles Farm. Two General CEU’s will be offered for pesticide applicators. There will also be a trade show. The event will also have plenty of fun and information for kids. The Thorndale Lady Dogs softball team traveled to take on the Weimar Lady Cats in the Regional Semifinals. The Lady Dogs were swept by Weimar in the series 2-0 to bring their incredible season to an end. Game 1 took place on Wednesday, May 15, at Brenham High School. Thorndale was shut out by the Lady Cats 1-0 in a game that was a pure pitchers duel. Milam County WW I soldier’s identification returns home
Pvt. First Class Oliver H. Lankford, a U.S. soldier who served in World War I, was posthumously responsible for an impromptu gathering at the Milam County Courthouse on Monday afternoon. County Judge Bill Whitmire hosted a small gathering in his office as a once lost “dog tag” from 1918 was given to the Milam County Historical Commission and the Milam County Historical Museum. AUSTIN - With this being her final high school track and field meet before beginning her collegiate career at Texas A&M, Yierra Flemings wanted to save her best for last. The Yoe senior did just that. Flemings earned medals in all four events that she competed in last Thursday at the Class 3A state meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin. Flemings finished second in both the long and triple jumps, and won the 100-meter hurdles and 400-meter run. Railroad Museum to host May the 4th Be With You event
Boys and Girls, Moms, and Dads may the fourth be with you! That’s right, Saturday, May 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. the Milam County Railroad Museum will be hosting a special event for kids (young and old). We are having a Star Wars character scavenger hunt on Old Town Cameron. Chewy, Luke, Princess Lea and many other characters from the beloved Star Wars movies will be hiding behind buildings, trees and maybe even trains. We want our youngster to see if they can find all of them for us. The trains will of course be running. Sometimes the characters will have to be found in the dark too! Tables will be set up for youngster to color their favorite Star Wars hero or villain. Mom, Dad, Grandma and Grandpa can help too! We’ll have popcorn and family fun. Cotton Scout School Planned for May 9
The Southern Blacklands Cotton Scout School will be held on Thursday, May 9, at the Buckholts Community Center. This will be an outstanding opportunity for cotton producers to hear important topics such as cotton insect pest management, cotton growth and development, and common weeds of cotton. Yoemen top McGregor, fall to Rockdale
The Cameron Yoemen baseball team got a big win and a loss in district play over the last week. They hosted the McGregor Bulldogs on Friday, April 19. Cameron was victorious over McGregor, winning 11-3. The Yoemen scored first in the top of the first inning with one run. Kason Goolsby led off with a walk then went on a base running spree. Dr. O.D. Butler Field Day set
The Dr. O.D. Butler Forage Field Day will take place on Friday, May 17. The field day will feature several trials and demonstration plots relating to forage production. Those include a Pre-emergent herbicide trial, a Urea Nitrogen rate Trial, and a trial regarding liming material differences and their effectiveness. Producers will also hear from various vendors throughout different sectors of agriculture. In the afternoon, there will be discussions regarding TDA Laws and Regulations, the Right to Farm Act, as well as a market update. Pesticide applicators will receive 3 CEU’s, 2 General and 1 in Laws and Regulations towards the renewal of their applicators license. The Cameron Yoemen baseball team hosted the Lexington Eagles on Wednesday, April 10. Cameron was victorious over Lexington, winning 12-1 in six innings. The Yoemen jumped on Lexington right away with three runs in the first inning to take an early 3-0 lead. Xavier Gilmon singled on a ground ball past the pitcher to bring home the first run. The Thorndale Lady Dogs softball team clinched the District title with a 15-1 record. They hosted the Milano Lady Eagles on Wednesday, April 10. Thorndale was defeated by Milano, losing 9-2.
