Cal Poly Humboldt Artist Wins 2024 California Duck Stamp Contest
A painting by Cynthia Fisher of Hamilton, Montana has been chosen as the winner of the 2024 California Duck Stamp Contest. “I learned to love waterfowl during my years in college at Cal Poly Humboldt,” said artist Fisher.” “I spent all my times studying ducks and other birds, doing taxidermy, and went on the first of many Duck hunts after that,” said artist Fisher. Judges first noted the position and orientation of the mallards in Fisher’s painting, describing the ducks in flight as an action shot. The painting reflected the background as Sutter Buttes, a small mountain village near Yuba City in Sutter County. Artist Fisher’s Blue Ribbon winner and three runners up will be on display at the Pacific Flyway Decoy Association Annual Wildlife Art Festival in Sacramento.

Arrest made in Flora Fire near Geyserville
Authorities announced an arrest Thursday in connection with a vegetation fire that started near Geyserville in Sonoma County on Wednesday afternoon.According to Cal Fire, authorities arrested 44-year-old Justin Roy Jones around 7:25 p.m., about three hours after the fire started. Roy is a resident of the community of Anderson in Shasta County.Investigators said Jones was seen driving his truck, which had no right front tire, for more than four miles, creating sparks as the wheel grinded on the asphalt. The sparks caused three separate fires along Chalk Hill Road.The fire grew to 36 acres before firefighters were able to stop its forward progress at 7:15 p.m.As of Thursday morning, the fire was 50% contained, according to Cal Fire. Chalk Hill Road, which was closed since the start of the fire, also reopened to traffic. Jones was booked into the Sonoma County Jail on suspicion of unlawfully and recklessly starting a fire to any structure forestland or property, along with violating terms of his probation.According to jail records, Jones' next court appearance is scheduled for Friday.

Vintage Wine Estates Inc. is filing for bankruptcy. The North Bay Business Journal reports that the Santa Rosa based producer has filed for Chapter 11 reorganization to “establish a fair, structured process for VWE to address outstanding debt obligations while the business pursues the sale of its assets.” They are looking to sell all or nearly all of their assets which include Ace Cider and wine brands B.R. Cohn, Girard, Clos Pegase and Viansa. Vintage recently sold Cosentino Winery of Napa Valley to Gene Wines LLC on Friday for $10.5 million. At of the end of March, Vintage had about $475-million dollars in assets and $400-million in liabilities.
