Optum laying off 364 employees in California, many at urgent care facilities
Optum, a health care company owned by UnitedHealth Group, is laying off 364 workers in California, many of them at urgent care facilities.The company is laying off 525 people nationwide.According to a letter from Optum sent to the Employment Development Department, layoffs and departmental closures are being carried out in Los Angeles, San Bernardino, and Riverside counties.Locations include Glendora, Montebello, Covina, Pasadena, Long Beach, Redlands, Highland, Los Angeles, Beaumont, Irvine, Hayward, El Segundo and Cerritos.Optum didn't give a reason for the layoffs and didn't say if severance pay is being offered. The layoffs will take place in series of eight "waves," starting in September and ending in January.

Workers link US, Canadian sides of new Gordie Howe International Bridge over Detroit River
DETROIT (AP) — Workers have linked the U.S. and Canadian sides of the new Gordie Howe International Bridge spanning the Detroit River. The Detroit News reports the workers finished connecting southwest Detroit and northwest Windsor on Wednesday. The bridge will provide another link between one of the busiest commercial points on the U.S-Canadian border when it is completed in fall 2025. About a third of all trade between the two countries occurs between Detroit and Windsor. The bridge deck alone has taken six years to build. When it is finished, the bridge will measure 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers), placing it among the 10 longest bridges in North America.

This comes despite two owners of the restaurant claiming the matter was over and the allegations retracted. Woman found fatally shot in East Oakland overnight
A female victim was shot and killed in East Oakland early Thursday morning, according to police. Officers were called to the area of International Boulevard between 20th and 21st avenues at about 2 a.m. to investigate reports of a shooting. The Oaklandside has learned that the city of Oakland quietly investigated how former Oakland police chief LeRonne Armstrong and his immediate successor Darren Allison handled explosive allegations of perjury and bribery by an OPD homicide detective. The city’s investigation, carried out by the Police Commission’s Community Police Review Agency and an outside law firm, found that Armstrong and Allison failed to ensure OPD’s internal affairs division rigorously and fairly examined the accusations against the detective. Investigators concluded Armstrong and Allison both fell short in their authorities and responsibilities as commanding officers.
