Rockville Celebrates Independence Day at Mattie J.T. Stepanek Park
The City of Rockville is hosting its annual Independence Day celebration at Mattie J.T. Stepanek Park in King Farm from 7-10 p.m. Thursday. Kicking off the event, Music by Uncle Jesse will perform until 8:45 p.m., when Mayor Monique Ashton and the city council will commemorate the holiday with a warm welcome. Then, the Victorian Lyric Opera Company will perform the national anthem before returning to Music by Uncle Jesse, who will continue performing until the fireworks display at 9:15 p.m.
Good times for Hard Times
Nearly a year after it closed due to plumbing issues, Hard Times Cafe is making its long-awaited comeback at the Woodley Gardens Shopping Center in Rockville. The restaurant’s popular chili will be ready in time for dinner on Friday July 5th, with lunch service resuming on the 9th. Co-owner Bob Howard, who opened this Hard Times location in 1984, says the new menu is largely unchanged but the decor has gotten an upgrade. “We put in a brand new floor, painted the place, stained and refinished,” he says. “The food will be just as great.”

Three Cities’ TRO Against County Is Rejected; Firefighters Pulled
As Greenbelt’s City Council held a closed-door meeting, Berwyn Heights and College Park did the same. Around midnight on Thursday, June 27, the three cities filed a joint motion for a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) against County Executive Angela Alsobrooks and Prince George’s County Fire Chief Tiffany Green to prevent them from removing career firefighters from Greenbelt and Berwyn Heights on June 30.

Memorial planned for Noah Lippeatt, Mason grad, Marine killed in crash
Noah Lippeatt was on his way to see his family on Father's Day when he died in a motorcycle crash, Mason City Schools said in a Facebook post. The Mason grad was a Marine Lance Corporal serving in Washington D.C. A memorial visitation and celebration of Lippeatt's life is planned for Saturday.
Maryland approves $50.3M contract for removal of bridge collapse debris
A Maryland board led by Gov. Wes Moore approved a $50.3 million emergency contract on Wednesday to pay a Swedish construction company that removed debris from the March collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.While the work to remove debris from the federal channel in the Patapsco River was done by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Maryland entered into the emergency contract with Skanska USA Civil Southeast Inc. in April to remove debris from other channels that could then be used by salvage and commercial vessels after the collapse.Skanska was chosen because it had successfully demolished the existing Nice/Middleton...

Virginia State Police tried to stop a Nissan driving west on Old Keene Mill Rd. in Springfield at 5:14 p.m. on June 30 for reckless driving. Police say the driver refused to stop, instead speeding away. The pursuit concluded near Old Keene Mill Rd and Spring Street when the Nissan struck multiple other vehicles, and the suspect driver and passenger fled on foot. The Nissan was left in drive and stopped by the same state trooper who positioned his vehicle in front of the moving Nissan.
