    10 things to do in the Finger Lakes this week

    The Fourth of July holiday is in the rearview mirror. Now it's time to get on with the rest of summer because before you know it, Labor Day will be here.

    To erase that depressing thought from your mind, here's what's happening this week.

    1. Jason Mraz at CMAC

    Jason Mraz and the Superband will be performing at Constellation Brands-Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, July 10. Doors open at 6 p.m. at CMAC, 3355 Marvin Sands Drive.     2. Learn about Finger Lakes notables

    Author Richard L. Hermann will give a talk from 7 to 9 p.m. July 10 at Little Lakes Community Center, 4705 S. Main St., Hemlock. Hermann is the author of “Eminent Riparians: Biographical Sketches of Finger Lakes Luminaries and Leading Lights,” which encompasses more than 50 biographical sketches of some of the most prominent individuals who either come from the Finger Lakes or spent considerable time here on their way to prominence and fame. The book is available for purchase from the Ontario County Historical Society or at Amazon.com.

    3. A call for teen actors in Canandaigua

    There will be a Teen Theater actors meeting from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, July 11, at Wood Library, 134 N. Main St., Canandaigua. Actors in grades 7-12 who are interested in this year's Teen Theater performance can attend this meeting to learn more about the process. Participants will also meet Director Scott Schauman.     4. Science for adults on Canandaigua Lake

    The Canandaigua Lake Watershed Association will host a community science evening from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. July 11 at Onanda Park, 4965 County Road 16, Canandaigua. This science camp for adults features interactive stations to learn about aquatic plants, terrestrial invasive species, aquatic macroinvertebrates and the Watershed Association’s citizen science programs. A light dinner will be served. Admission is free, but registration is required at https://forms.gle/RgwfEPRm9mj11Rkf6 .

    5. Memorial concert series in Victor continues

    Hey Mabel will perform in concert 7 to 8:30 p.m. July 11 at Victor Municipal Park, 6680 Paparone Drive, Victor. The group performs blues, rock, soul and pop music in this all-ages free show. Uncle Buck's Food Cart will be there too. The concert is part of the Sid Partington Memorial Concert Series.

    6. 'Vanities' opens at Bristol Valley Theater in Naples

    A preview performance of Bristol Valley Theater's "Vanities" will be held at 7:30 p.m. July 11 at the theater, 151 S. Main St., Naples. The official opening night performance is at 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 12. Shows continue through July 20. “Vanities,” by Jack Heifner, is an exuberant comedy that chronicles a decade in the lives of three young Texas women: close friends and sometime rivals, their relationships change as life throws each the inevitable curveballs of growing up.     7. Find a few bargains in West Bloomfield

    The West Bloomfield Historical Society sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 13, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, July 14, at the society’s headquarters, 8966 Routes 5 and 20, West Bloomfield. In its 32 nd year, the sale is the primary fundraiser for the organization. Visitors will find furniture, household items, tools, books, antiques, collectibles, jewelry and toys — out front and inside. On the side lawn, nearly 25 additional sellers will hold their own yard sales. Visitors can also browse local history exhibits and enjoy breakfast, lunch and a coffee bar on site.     8. See lush gardens and historic buildings in Canandaigua

    The Ontario County Historical Society’s Garden & Historic Building Tour takes place from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at several locations in the Canandaigua area. The self-guided tour includes five private gardens, an arboretum, one historic building with gardens and one commercial historic site. Location addresses will be provided to guests in a ticketed booklet. Tickets can be purchased online at www.OCHS.org through July 12. The cost is $30 per ticket. Pending availability, tickets can be purchased the day of the event at the museum, 55 N. Main St., Canandaigua.

    9. Enjoy the music in nature in Naples

    The Orchestra in the Pines event will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. July 13 at Rochester Museum and Science Center’s Cumming Nature Center, 6472 Gulick Road, Naples. The Finger Lakes Symphony will perform a selection of pops and light classical music amid the red pines. Arrive earlier for a hike and bring a picnic lunch. An instrument petting zoo for young concertgoers will be at 2 p.m., before the concert. The rain date is Sunday, July 14.

    10. Explore plant life in old-growth forest in Victor

    The Canandaigua Botanical Society will host a walk at Bentley Woods on Log Cabin Road in Victor. Finger Lakes Community College professor emeritus Bruce Gilman will lead the way at 2 p.m. July 13 through this Nature Conservancy property, which members of the Canandaigua Botanical Society has been visiting since the 1970s. This 21-acre old-growth forest is landlocked by residential properties. Learn about plant life and more.
