CANASTOTA, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Canastota is asking for patience as they work to piece back together a community torn apart so quickly by a storm.

An 82-year-old man has died and currently, five houses are completely uninhabitable following severe storms on Tuesday. The National Weather service is set to go in and give the community more answers on whether a tornado touched down or not.

“It’s an unusual event for Central New York, we are saddened, again, that we’ve had a fatality,” said Jim Cunningham, Chairman on the Madison County Board of Supervisors.

The Canastota pool and local library are open, and being offered as options for residents to cool down.

Two food trucks will be around from 4 p.m. until they run out of food, giving out free dinners. And the YMCA is collecting donations for anyone impacted.

Roseanne Warner, Mayor of the Village of Canastota gave credit to the Village of Canastota, Town of Lennox, Town of Cazenovia, Village of Chittenango, Town of Sullivan and Madison County for all providing highway crews to assist.

“We will work with anybody who asks for help,” said Warner.

The main emphasis is that it will all take time.

As for the City of Oneida, their mayor, Rick Rossi says that there is a lot of property damage and downed power lines.

Luckily, the power to Oneida Hospital was restored around 9 a.m.

“It’s going to be a long process but thank you for your patience,” said Rossi.

The City of Oneida’s Library, Chapman Pool, and Kallet Civic Center are viable options if residents are looking to cool off during the hot summer days ahead. National Grid is giving out water and dry ice as well.

For those who are hungry, Church on the Rock is giving out free breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
