Canby School District has made its choice. Jennifer Patterson will begin her role as the new superintendent of Canby Schools on July 15.

The Canby School Board conducted a national search and officially tabbed Patterson as superintendent on Wednesday, July 3, at an 8 a.m. special meeting.

“I am so honored and excited to join the Canby School District and serve as Canby’s next superintendent,” Patterson said. “I look forward to collaborating with the dedicated educators, staff, students, parents and community members to continue Canby’s tradition of strong schools and strong community.

“Together, we will strive to create an inclusive, innovative and supportive environment where every student can thrive and is ready to meet their future,” she added.

With 24 years of experience, Patterson currently leads the state in teaching, learning and assessment in her role as assistant superintendent, where she supports all 197 school districts across Oregon.

Additionally, she has served as the senior director of schools at Portland Public Schools, principal at Boones Ferry Primary School in Wilsonville and a teacher at Oregon Trail Elementary in Happy Valley.

She holds an administrative license from Portland State University, a Master of Arts in teaching from Willamette University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and environmental studies from the University of Oregon Clark Honors College.

Patterson has lived in Wilsonville for 17 years with her husband Jeremiah and their two children. She said she enjoys good food, camping and traveling with her family, learning new things, speaking Spanish, reading, thrifting, and being in schools.

The board employed recruiting firm McPherson & Jacobson L.L.C. to aid in the search process and surveyed the community for input. Many respondents agreed the district needs someone who is personable, supportive, and a great listener. Board Chair Sara Magenheimer said Patterson brings all this and more.

“The board is excited to welcome Mrs. Patterson to the Canby community,” Magenheimer said. “During the extensive interview process, it was clear her rich experience with schools across the state coupled with her heart for kids, would be a valuable asset to our district. Under her positive and strong leadership, I am confident in the success of our Canby students.”

Once Patterson takes the reins this month, she will work with staff to plan for the 2024-2025 school year, which begins Sept. 3.

“I look forward to meeting you, hearing from you and being of service to Canby’s children, educators, families and community for years to come,” Patterson said.
