    Education roundup: Canton Country Day appoints new head of school

    CANTON – Canton Country Day School has appointed Patrick Ater as its new head of school. Ater has 17 years of teaching experience at the school.

    A lifetime resident of Stark County, Patrick resides in Plain Township with his family; wife, Maureen, and daughters Audrey, Grace, and Evelyn, all students at Canton County Day School.

    Stark delegates serve as elected officials at Buckeye Boys State

    American Legion Buckeye Boys State Stark County delegates Jacob Kandis and Daniel Zakari held high-ranking elected state officials positions from June 9-16 at Buckeye Boys State at Miami University in Oxford.

    Kandis will be a senior at Sandy Valley High School and was elected to serve as the Buckeye Boys State lieutenant governor. Jacob was sponsored by the American Legion Ohio Post 0244. Daniel Zakari will be a senior at Jackson High School and was elected to serve as the Buckeye Boys State speaker of the House of Representatives.

    American Legion Buckeye Boys State is an eight-day, hands-on experience in the operation of the democratic form of government, the organization of political parties, and the relationship of one to the other in shaping Ohio government.

    Walsh University nets grant for leadership program

    NORTH CANTON – Walsh University received a $10,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Higher Education to support the Walsh Prevention Education and Programming Department in establishing a new initiative called the “Interpersonal Leadership Endorsement.”

    The grant will enable Walsh to purchase curriculum and supplies necessary to offer a certification course designed to prepare resident assistants, peer mentors and freshmen to address and respond to power-based relationship violence, according to a news release. The program will integrate social norms marketing, healthy relationship training, bystander intervention training, and experiential service learning. The initiative will involve collaboration with Stark County community partners, including COMPASS Sexual Assault Crisis Center.

    Mount Union adds programs in artificial intelligence

    ALLIANCE – University of Mount Union has announced two new minors to develop leaders ready to take on the next generation of technology: artificial intelligence and applied artificial intelligence.

    The artificial intelligence program is designed for those interested in pursuing a career in the technical side of AI. Students will enhance skills in machine learning, algorithm development and programming.

    Mount Union's new offering in applied artificial intelligence provides a more inclusive and accessible experience, according to a news release. This minor is designed for those looking to harness the power of AI tools and applications in their careers. The applied AI program offers an understanding of AI fundamentals, hands-on experiences with AI applications and tools relevant to students’ disciplines and an exploration of ethical issues.

    Mount Union PT program earns 10-year reaccreditation

    ALLIANCE – The University of Mount Union’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program, established in 2016, has earned a 10-year reaccreditation from the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education. Mount Union’s DPT program earned its first accreditation in 2019.
