    Big Brothers Big Sisters wins award

    AKRON – Big Brothers Big Sisters of Summit, Medina and Stark Counties has been recognized as a Big Brothers Big Sisters of America Growth Award Winner for program excellence in 2023.

    The Growth Award recognizes agencies that have increased the number of mentors and youth who are matched through the program, year over year. In the past year, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Summit, Medina and Stark Counties has served 187 youth and grown its local services by 65%.

    The local agency was one of 100 organizations to receive the top honor.

    “I am so proud of our board and staff for making quality programming a priority for our local children,”Executive Director Kyle Putinski said in a prepared statement. “Their hard work equates to more mentorship in Northeast Ohio and a brighter future for area youth.”

    'Romeo and Juliet' planned at Glamorgan Castle

    ALLIANCE – Shakespeare at the Castle returns this year with “Romeo and Juliet” at Alliance’s Glamorgan Castle. The show will run two weekends with eight total performances, July 25-28 and Aug. 1-4. The Shakespeare at the Castle adaptation will be directed by Artistic Director Kevin P. Kern.

    All performances begin at 7 p.m., and tickets are on sale now. General admission pre-sale tickets are $20 for adults and $13 for children. Bleacher pre-sale tickets are $12. Children younger than 6 are admitted free but still require a ticket. General admission tickets on the day of the performance will be $25 for adults and $20 for students. Bleacher seats on the day of the performance will be $15. Buy tickets at mountunion.edu/boxoffice.

    ArtFest seeks vendors

    ALLIANCE – Vendor registration is open for the 60th annual ArtFest sponsored by the University of Mount Union and the Alliance Area Chamber of Commerce. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 21 at the event’s traditional location by the Campus Lakes.

    The ArtFest committee is looking for fine art in the traditional and modern media, as well as functional art that has a specific utility yet is originally creative either in its purpose or aesthetic appearance. Cash awards and ribbons will be presented to the top artists in each category (fine art and functional art) and a Best of Show. Awards also will be presented in the junior and collegiate categories, along with a People’s Choice award.

    Coffee with a Cop is Thursday at McDonald’s

    CANTON – The public is invited to the next Coffee with a Cop event at 8 a.m. Thursday at McDonald’s, 3101 Cleveland Ave. NW. The Coffee with a Cop program is designed to provide an opportunity for community members to ask questions, bring concerns, get to know the members of the Stark County Sheriff’s Office better and to learn about how the Sheriff’s Office serves the community.

    Events will close streets this weekend

    CANTON − The EN-RICH-MENT African American Arts and Cultural Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Saturday at Centennial Plaza. The event will include live art, food, Zumba, yoga, stomp and performances by Sisters of Soul, Nicasso Turpin, Jean P, and headliner New Edition Experience. The following streets will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. for the event, according to the Police Department:

    • Third and Fourth streets NW from Cleveland Avenue to Market Avenue N
    • Court Avenue NW from Second Street to Fifth Street NW

    The following streets will be closed Thursday through July 21 for the NFL Flag Football Championship:

    • 17th Street NW from Clarendon Avenue to Harrison Avenue
    • Harrison Avenue from the stadium loading dock to Helen Place NW
    • Helen Place NW from Clarendon Avenue to Harrison Avenue
    • Champions Gateway from 17th Street NW to the Center for Performance (dome)

    New court administrator appointed

    CANTON − The judges of the Stark County Common Pleas Court General Division have appointed Cortney R. Oren Morgan as court administrator to succeed Dwaine Hemphill, who is retiring. The court administrator transition will be finalized Sept. 9.

    Morgan graduated magna cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center and was admitted to the Ohio Bar in 2003 and the federal Northern District in 2004. She has worked for the U.S. Department of Labor, and has served as Cleveland assistant law director, counsel for Progressive Insurance and business founder of Atlas Conflict Resolution. She has worked for the General Division as a magistrate, mediator and business analyst for technology projects. She also has been an organizer, activist and educator against human trafficking in Ohio.

    Chicago tribute concert set

    JACKSON TWP. – Chicago tribute band Brass Metropolis will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at The Nash Family Jackson Amphitheater, 7454 Community Parkway NW. Gates will open at 6 p.m. Parking is free. For tickets and more information, visit www.jacksonamphitheater.com.

    Stark State College plans open houses

    JACKSON TWP. – Stark State College invites students, parents and adults looking for a new career to attend its upcoming summer open houses. The events are from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday on the main campus, 6200 Frank Ave. NW, and July 24 at Stark State College Akron, 360 Perkins St., Akron.

    Guests will learn about the admissions process, talk with faculty and staff, learn about student services and resources, and take a tour.

    Financial aid staff will be available to help students and parents look at financial aid, submit FAFSA applications and discuss scholarship opportunities.

    Free concert Thursday at Quail Hollow Park

    LAKE TWP. − A small ensemble from the Canton Symphony Orchestra will perform a free concert from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Quail Hollow Park Gazebo, 13480 Congress Lake Ave NE. The event is part of Stark Parks’ and the Canton Symphony Orchestra’s Summer Serenades in the Park.

    In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be canceled.     Free concerts at Duncan Plaza

    MASSILLON – Floyd Live and Light Show will perform at 8 p.m. Thursday, and Blue Note Jazz Combo will perform at 7 p.m. July 22 as part of the free Summer Concert Series at Duncan Plaza, 121 Lincoln Way E. Bring a chair or blanket for seating.

    Music and food trucks Thursday

    NORTH CANTON – Erin Nicole Neal & The Chill Factors will perform an eclectic mix of blues, rock, pop, soul, jazz and funk from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday on the City Hall front patio, 145 N. Main St., as part of the North Canton Summer Series. The food trucks will be Forro's Pizza and SMOOSH Cookies.

    Fishing derby, Summerfest at Sippo Lake

    PERRY TWP. – The annual Sippo Lake Night Fishing Derby, open to all ages, will be held at the Sippo Lake Marina from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday.

    The entry fee is $5 cash per person, with registration beginning at 5 p.m. This derby requires a current fishing license. Anglers younger than 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Two poles per participant are permitted, and all bait must be natural or live. Winners must be present to claim prizes.

    Summerfest will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Sippo Lake Park. Enjoy music and activities for all ages, such as fishing, hiking, hoverball archery, and the chance to meet wildlife ambassador animals. The Stark Library will also be on-site with an activity. This drop-in event will take place at all three entrances of Sippo Lake Park (Off of Perry Drive, 12th Street and Genoa Avenue); each entrance will offer different activities.     During the event, enjoy a free 15-minute rental of a kayak or pedal boat from the Sippo Lake Park Marina. The Berkley Fishing Team will be available to help with fishing guidance, and you can use free live bait and fishing poles (current state fishing regulations apply). Concessions will be available for purchase at the Marina and Exploration Gateway. The Marina and boat ramp will resume with regular rentals at 3 p.m.

    The Vindys to perform July 25

    PLAIN TWP. – Youngstown-based band The Vindys will perform at 7 p.m. July 25 at the Legacy Park Amphitheater, 2600 Easton St. NE, as part of the Summer Concert Series. The amphitheater will open at 5 p.m. For tickets, $10 to $150, visit plaintownshipamphitheater.com/events/.

    Group offering emergency home safety kit giveaway

    The Community Awareness and Emergency Response Security Radio Patrol is taking donations for prizes for an emergency home safety kit giveaway, a Midland Emergency AM/FM weather crank radio, fire extinguisher, emergency light, first-aid kit. Each donation buys one prize ticket.

    The group's mission, according to its Facebook page, is "to provide emergency radio communication, traffic, crowd control and public security."
